The winner would be the loser who evaluates defeat the ideal. While much was made into the Liberty Insurance All-Ireland Senior Camogie Championship Final of Kilkenny litany of beats at the build-up Galway have experienced their run affairs.
There was a clear sense in the aftermath that it felt that a number of the criticism they’d received because of not making it into the September bash since 2015 was harsh and motivated the Tribeswomen.
It was evident from speaking to midfield dynamo Aoife Donohue, that the Galway players claimed they had suffered every bit as much shock as their Kilkenny counterparts and they had no intention of enduring anymore.
«There’s huge belief in this team» said Donohue.
«Everyone trusts every other in the category. We’ve already been there. We’ve lost as much as Kilkenny lost. There’s some of the girls have lost four or three All-Irelands, we’ve been defeated in semi-finals.
«We’ve been on the other side of it too and I think that it’s about time we have a little credit today we’ve gotten online. What a savage team»
Another motivation that is clear was that the sight of colleague Tara Kenny unable to take her place after suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury in their training game, 10 days before what would have become her sporting life’s day.
«We played a board game Thursday week. A ball came between her and Ailish (O’Reilly). Tara slipped. Went for a scan the next day. Cruciate gone,» clarified Donohue.
«It obviously had a huge effect on the group but we mentioned we were planning to head out and win for Tara and as Sarah (Dervan) stated on the steps (in her victory speech), she had been the 16th girl who drove us on the line. I can’t picture how it was for her to watch to the sideline.
«But that’s the strength that is in the panel. Players come in and have an effect. Catherine Finnerty stood up, she has lots of energy and legs and she remained going until the final whistle.»
There were a number of Americans out of Galway triumph in 2013 although dervan was that the captain which stood to them.
«There’s leaders all around the pitch,» lasted Donohue. «Kilkenny went down and got a dent, Niamh Kilkenny comes back the pitch up and then also throws the ball over the bar. We had them all over the area.
«We knew we had a fantastic opportunity coming up. We beat Kilkenny in the League Final, you will find two things in it Athenry (at the very first round of the Championship if Kilkenny prevailed) and we believed we did not carry out that afternoon.
«(Manager) Cathal (Murray) stated if we had been at the match with 10 minutes we’d come from the right side and happily that’s occurred.»
For her role, Donohue was a revelation as a midfielder, with won an All-Star within an inside.
«I’ll play anywhere,» she said. «I do not care as long as I am on the group. If that was the ideal place for me went to win and that I did not mind in any way. I have played for your club. But I’ve already been out and in this past year. Even in the past few minutes I moved wing-forward and Ann Marie Starr came on.»
