The winner would be. While much was created into the Liberty Insurance All-Ireland Senior Camogie Championship Final of the gut-wrenching litany of beats of Kilkenny at the build-up Galway have experienced their run events.
There was a very clear sense from the aftermath that it believed that a number of the criticism they had obtained over the years because of not making it into the September bash was brutal and clearly motivated the Tribeswomen.
It was also evident from speaking to midfield dynamo Aoife Donohue, the Galway players claimed that they had endured every bit as much heartache as their Kilkenny counterparts and they had no intention of suffering.
«There’s huge belief in this group» said Donohue.
«Everyone trusts each other in the group. We have already been there. We’ve lost up to Kilkenny lost. There’s some of the girls have dropped four or even three All-Irelands, we have been defeated in semi-finals.
«We have been on the opposite side of it also and I think it’s about time we got a little credit today we’ve gotten on the internet. What a barbarous team»
Another clear motivation was the sight of colleague Tara Kenny struggling to take her place after suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury in their last training match, 10 days before what would have been the biggest day of her athletic life.
«We played with a panel game last Thursday week. A ball came in between her and Ailish (O’Reilly). Tara slipped. Went to get a scan the next day. Cruciate gone,» clarified Donohue.
«It clearly had a huge influence on the group but we mentioned we were going to go out and win for Tara and as Sarah (Dervan) stated up on the measures (in her victory speech), she was the 16th girl who drove us over the line. I can not picture how it had been for her to see on the sideline.
«But that’s the strength that’s in the panel. Players come in and have an impact. Catherine Finnerty stood up, she’s loads of legs and energy and she stayed going until the last whistle.»
Dervan was the captain but there were several Americans out of the past victory in 2013 of Galway which stood to them.
«There is leaders all around the pitch, and» continued Donohue. «Kilkenny went and got a dent, Niamh Kilkenny comes back the pitch up and throws the ball over the bar. We had them throughout the area.
«We knew we had a fantastic opportunity coming up. We beat Kilkenny in the League Final, there were just two things inside Athenry (in the very first round of the Championship once Kilkenny prevailed) and we felt we did not perform that day.
«(Manager) Cathal (Murray) stated if we had been at the match with 10 minutes we’d come out the ideal side and thankfully that has occurred.»
Donohue was a revelation for a midfielder, with won an All-Star as an inside.
«I will play anywhere,» she explained. «I do not care as long as I am on the team. If this was the right place for me went to win and I did not mind. I have played for your club. But I’ve already been in and out year. Even in the last couple of moments I went wing-forward and Ann Marie Starr came .»
